Concert Review: White Stripes @ Masonic Temple, Detroit

At the Masonic Temple, on a cold cold night in downtown Detroit, the White Stripes were set to play the second show of two sold out homecoming gigs.

In an effort to entertain people before the bands came on stage, old time cartoons where played on a big movie screen at the front of the house. When Felix the Cat was done doing his thing, The Paybacks took the stage and kicked things off with the song "Scotch Love". The band sounded great, playing songs off of their album "Knock Loud". At one point singer Wendy Case encouraged everyone to come down to the stage, and much of the crowd took her advice. The band closed the show by inviting thier original guitar player, Marco Delicato, to join them on "Tie Me In A Knot".

The crowd erupted as Meg White took the stage first, looking amazing in a white shirt with red leather pants. Jack then came out escorted by Tracee Miller, of Blanche fame, who was dressed as a nurse - symbolic of the fact this was Jack's first home show since his accident.

Hello candy cane children... oh wait that's someone else's line.

So this is the so called "biggest bar night of the year" or as some call it "amateur night". The lineup of shows tonight is great and I'm sure every other bar in town will be jammed so have fun, be careful and get there early.

Benefit For Bootsey X

benefit for bootsey x
You can bet that all of Detroit's true garage rockers will be at Jacoby's on Thursday night for a benefit for local underground legend Bootsey X. Bootsey, aka Bobby Beyond, has been a staple of the Detroit rock scene since his early days a drummer for the Ramrods. More recently, he's known as the infamous frontman of the Lovemasters.

A few weeks back, his apartment was destroyed by a fire. On Thursday at Jacoby's, the Detroit rock family will show their support for Bootsey with a show including The Fondas, The Shanks, The Cocktail Shake, The Earworms, The Polish Muslims, The Ex-Mutants and Danny & Margaret Dollrod. Metrotimes rock critic Brian Smith will DJ and various bands will donate CDs to be sold for the cause.

NY Post Postes About The White Stripes

Was That Snow I Saw? 65 one day, snow the next, the joys of Michigan.....

The NY Post has all the Jack White news today and this comes to us from the New York Post.

One-man army: At Thursday's White Stripes show at Roseland, Jack White stopped in the middle of "Look Me Over Closely," to yell at two guys in the crowd: "Take it outside! For God's sake - this is a Marlene Dietrich song and you guys are punching each other! I can taste the testosterone from here

LOOKS like things are rekindling between Renée Zellweger and White Stripes frontman Jack White. Our spies spotted Zellweger at the group's sold-out show at Roseland Thursday night, weeks after their romance reportedly cooled - which occurred after Zellweger packed on some pounds for "Bridget Jones: The Edge of Reason." Other celebs infesting the band's three-night stand were Jude Law, Joan Jett, Liv Tyler, Jim Jarmusch, Mos Def, Juliette Lewis and Spike Jonze.

Great news, Nick Lachey is going to be in the Thanksgiving Day Parade!!!!!!!!!

The Nail from the Uniroyal Tire is now on tour, make sure you catch it in your town.

Congrats to both the Lions and Pistons for blowing games yesterday.

Concert Review: 19 Wheels @ Magic Bag

19 wheels cd release party

On Saturday night, the 19 Wheels took the stage at a packed Magic Bag. The band showed up sporting new haircuts, new guitars and a batch of new songs. Having been absent from a Detroit area stage for well over a year, the 19 Wheels seemed very happy to be back playing in town.

The band kicked off their hour-long set with "Rabies", a song from their 2000 release Sugareen. The group also played cuts off of their forthcoming album Jawbreaker. New songs such as "Reactor", "Erasable", "Juliet" and "Really Stupid Girl" had more of a hard edge than previous work. Although these songs have yet to be released, a surprising number of people sang along with the lyrics. Lead singer Chris Johnston fought his way through a bad cold and had to hold back in some spots in order to make it through the show. In some spots the band was a little rusty, but they sounded good overall. They closed the set with "Colorado", the only song played off the band’s debut record 6 Ways from Sunday.

The night was kicked off by the Answer Machines and The Grande Nationals, who proudly displayed the home town of each band member, in the form of a T-shirt. --Matt Caruana

THEE LUCKY STIFFS @ the lager house

FRIDAY LOOKS GOOD TO ME

Here is some info on Jack White's musical contribution to the movie "Cold Mountain"

As the MCR crew bummed around town last night we noticed that Detroit Rock City had become Detroit Punk City. Hitting the Lager we saw The Lucky Stiffs kick some major ass. Although we didn't end up in a Miller Lite spot a good time was had. Then apparently the Garden Bowl has something called Garage Rock Free Thursdays which in turns means old punk.

While I was driving home I flipped on the enchanting Liz Copeland over on WDET and she had Cas and Gene from PasCal in the studio. They played songs off of their forthcoming ep "Oh Honey We're Ridiculous" and chatted about the band's song writing and recording process among other topics. The band said they have already begun work on their 3rd EP. You can catch Pascal this Saturday at the Magic Stick as well as at their record release show/ holiday party which will take place December 20th at the Lager House.

The News profiles local artist Jim Pallas who is having an art exhibit next week.

Ms. Melody talks with singer, songwriter, producer, etc Inohs Sivad about her new cd and her upcoming cd release show. which will take place tonight at Charles H. Wright Museum of African American History.

Thanks to the 3 big newspapers in this town for letting me down this morning.

I'M GOING TO BE THE NEXT BACHELOR!!!

Congrats to Hemigod because they have just inked a deal with Atlantic Records. The band will have a radio single out in February and a full length album is set for March which will be mixed by Kid Rock. The band is set to record at least 2 albums with Atlantic.

3 sides
Tonight the pride of Ferndale, Bachelor Bob, will make his final decision tonight about which girl he will choose. Bob also has a cd coming out on November 25th entitled "3 Sides". If you go to Amazon.com today, Bob is the celebrity of the day and has his picks for Christmas listed and one of them happens to be the 19 Wheels cd "Sugareen".

In other Bachelor news, if you head over to the Post Bar in Novi tonight, producers from The Bachelor will be there conducting interviews with the first 300 men and women who show up. You must be 21, single with no children and be present for your interview when called. This could be your big chance to not only find a future spouse but become a star. If anyone needs me tonight I will be at The Post.

The Free Press talks with artist Matt Busch, who will be having an art sale at the Emerald this Thursday which will also feature performances from Broadzilla, Arizing, Mindcandy and Rib. If you have never seen Matt's work I highly suggest checking it out.

Although we all thought it was only "Pabst Time" at the Lager House, Miller will be filming for a commercial there this Thursday night. The perk for all of us... you can get in free before 10 and see The Lucky Stiffs (with John Speck of the Fags). Thanks to Coaxme.org for pointing this out.

Concert Review: Electric Six @ MSU

electric six

electric sixOur dance heroes have returned from the Old World. Electric Six set up a pseudo disco in a Michigan State University lecture hall on November 8. Playing to a packed crowd of dancing MSU students, it was clear that word of Dick the Dictator and his flamboyant crew has spread across the Atlantic. Clad in homemade t-shirts reading "Fire in the Disco" and "Danger Danger," the Spartans proved they were ready to get down with the E6's disco-rock anthems.

The Detroit City Council warmed the crowd up to danceable Detroit rock. Next, Dick Valentine joined Junior Senior onstage as they played their last tune as opening act on the Electric Six national tour. The show was packed with all the famaliar delights of the E6 including a shoutout to WJLB, Eminem song dedication, Queen reference and of course, a romp at the "Gay Bar" for a second encore.
