Concert Review: The Sirens, Bisou Bisou, The Valentinos @ Smalls

In true Valentine’s Day style, BISOU BISOU, THE VALENTINO’S and THE SIRENS rocked Small’s on Saturday night. The stage was decked out with special V-Day tapestries, and everyone – including the crowd – was dressed in style (not many rockers can get away with wearing a tutu, but now I know at least on Detroit lady can).

vday1 Concert Review: The Sirens, Bisou Bisou, The Valentinos @ Smalls concert reviews Unfortunately the evening got off to a bad start – we were running late and missed most of BISOU BISOU’S set. We did catch the last two songs, and if it was any indication of the rest of the set, it was a good show. As Detroit’s only French pop group, Jackie O (thanks for the Blow Pops), George (thanks for the Bon Bon’s) and Alva, did not disappoint.

Up next were THE VALENTINO’S – a mysterious band, as no one seems to know much about them. What I do know: 1. they were quite dapperly dressed, 2. they had a great sound and 3. I felt I needed to join the rest of the crowd and dance. I’m sure Detroit will hear much more about this well-dressed group in the future.

Around midnight, the rockin’ ladies known as THE vday2 Concert Review: The Sirens, Bisou Bisou, The Valentinos @ Smalls concert reviews SIRENS took the stage. As usual, the quintet was dressed in one-of-a-kind outfits, expressly decorated in honor of the ‘special day’ – I can’t wait to see what these hot rock chicks will don next. As a female, I love to see an all-girl band that can go toe-to-toe with the best of them, and THE SIRENS are no exception. The band played to a full house, and rocked out in true SIRENS style. Not your typical ‘cover band’ – THE SIRENS take each and every song they play, and make it their own. Muffy’s stage presence is amazing, her laugh is infectious and her voice is one of a kind. Plus, she has a beer holster on her mic stand – what could be better? Melody, one of the best female vday3 Concert Review: The Sirens, Bisou Bisou, The Valentinos @ Smalls concert reviews guitarists I’ve seen in a long time, was rockin out while wearing a tiara. Bassist Michelle Lanoo, and newest member, guitarist Aran Ruth, looked smashing in their outfits – and rocked throughout the entire show. With a special Valentine’s Day message on her drum set, Deanne’s drumming was stellar. Not only do these ladies leave the audience wanting more SIRENS action (one person kept yelling “play 20 more songs”), the band is excellent at improvisation…during the third to last song, Aran broke one of her guitar strings and Melody quickly retrieved a back-up instrument. Without missing a beat, Muffy, Deanne and Michelle continued as a trio until Melody and Aran sauntered back on stage. Valentine’s Day never sounded so sweet! — Jacquie Trost
