“Frank Sinatra after a gallon of French liquor.” That’s how George Papanikos described his new musical venture. George crooned like no other, while Dr. Fulvio Lonardo tickled the ivories of the keyboard. Dressed dapperly in black ties and pants, the duo hit the stage for a 20 minute set at the Lager House this past Friday night. Reminiscent of the lounge acts of yesteryear, and piano bars of today, George and the Good Doctor gave a performance that one person described as “heart melting”. The mellow sound put you at ease, and George’s stage presence kept your eyes glued to the stage. Although the music was not what one might expect to hear at the Lager House, it was truly a treat to hear a smooth voice backed by the softness of a piano.
outfit from Pittsburgh. The band was an eclectic mix of musicians, playing a 60’s soul, sometimes funk, sound. Christopher, our photographer extraordinaire, described them as “the Archies meets the Ventures”. The group commonly consists of a bassist (Bill Julin), guitarist (Kurt Edwards), drummer (Shaun Gilmour) and organist (Jennifer Baron). At this show, a trumpet and a trombone joined the New Alcindors, providing a heavy brass sound to a number of the songs. The group let the music speak for itself, as few songs included vocals. During the song ‘Black Jesus’, the horns sat out, and the quartet picked up the tempo and encouraged the audience to clap along. Although the band was not my cup of tea, they definitely knew how to entertain the crowd.
Next up were the Come Ons. Deanne’s heavenly voice provided a mellow, ethereal start, as she sang ‘Blushing’, the first song of the set. Throughout the performance, Deanne’s voice mixed well to the strong drum and guitar beats. During the second song, “Higher”, the group, with a special guest guitarist from Olympia, Washington, picked up the tempo. The entire Come Ons set was stellar – great sound and superb vocals. But, the highlight of the night, were the special guests appearances. First, Kate O’Hara - who, along with Deanne makes up Sunshine Doray - joined the Come Ons for a rendition of Donna Summer’s “I Feel Love”. The song and performance were AMAZING! It was done with an 80’s synth vibe, and Deanne and Kate’s voices blended together perfectly - very polished performance. The song had the entire crowd dancing and was one of the best surprises of the evening. Next, ‘The Boy Who Invented Rap' - the always entertaining esQuire - joined the stage - with his baby sister, Erika in tow. The duo joined the Come Ons for two songs – finishing with a rousing rendition of Beyonce’s “Crazy in Love”. The song was performed mostly by Deanne and Erika, but in true esQuire style, “Q” chimed in with a signature rap only he could pull off.
We know most of you nyc folks won't be able to drive all the way to Hamtramck this weekend for The Avatars show, but you can get your Detroit rock fix tonight -- The Go play the Continental. This band will undoubtedly rock your socks off and then some.
Any Having recently yucked it up on a Wednesday (see ROMANTICS review), I saw no reason to whoop it up on a Tuesday. With faithful Michelle, my chauffeur for the night, I headed off to meet up with fellow MCR Jacquie to catch Bisou Bisou. I've had several run ins with this French pop posse so far, each time I ended up missing their set. I came so close to seeing them on Valentines Day though...so imagine my surprise when they were still setting up when I got there! Having never been to Club Bartin Ferndale, I was pleasantly surprised. Its lounge style decor was well suited for tonight's line up. But I have to admit, a stage behind the bar - literally...may have to re-think that one. Still, both bands gave it a hella try. Bisou Bisou kicked off with their trademark French lyrics front and center. You gotta give it to them - it's damn original. While my ears fought to get a grasp on the lyrics, my feet started tapping.
Okay fine, not exactly breaking news since this went down a few weeks ago, but we think these photos are cool enough that you won't even notice we're covering it again with a better photo spread. Plus, don't forget that you've got a few more days remaing to check out the Fun House Art Show.
NOTE: Special thanks to Jerry Vile and Jerry Lubin for helping us out with these cool photos.
BLOWN AWAY! The Fags have blown the minds of another round of rock fans with their awesome brand of power pop. A packed crowd jammed into the Magic Bag on Saturday night to catch John Speck and The Fags.

This show also features Saturday Looks Good To Me and is a birthday bash for Eric Stollsteimer (Elevations) and Avatars guitarist Charlie Lorenzi. Who knows, maybe there will even be cake!
"Hump" day isn't generally the day to rock, but in this case I had to make an exception. After sitting in on the Yahoo chat with THE ROMANTICS last Sunday, I knew this was going to be one hell of a show. The last gig The Romantics did locally was at the Emerald Theater in Mount Clemens. With buzz about new CD steadily increasing, and a stellar support line up, I rushed out to rock and rock I did.Labels: Nice Device

Unfortunately the evening got off to a bad start – we were running late and missed most of BISOU BISOU’S set. We did catch the last two songs, and if it was any indication of the rest of the set, it was a good show. As Detroit’s only French pop group, Jackie O (thanks for the Blow Pops), George (thanks for the Bon Bon’s) and Alva, did not disappoint.
SIRENS took the stage. As usual, the quintet was dressed in one-of-a-kind outfits, expressly decorated in honor of the ‘special day’ – I can’t wait to see what these hot rock chicks will don next. As a female, I love to see an all-girl band that can go toe-to-toe with the best of them, and THE SIRENS are no exception. The band played to a full house, and rocked out in true SIRENS style. Not your typical ‘cover band’ – THE SIRENS take each and every song they play, and make it their own. Muffy’s stage presence is amazing, her laugh is infectious and her voice is one of a kind. Plus, she has a beer holster on her mic stand – what could be better? Melody, one of the best female
guitarists I’ve seen in a long time, was rockin out while wearing a tiara. Bassist Michelle Lanoo, and newest member, guitarist Aran Ruth, looked smashing in their outfits – and rocked throughout the entire show. With a special Valentine’s Day message on her drum set, Deanne’s drumming was stellar. Not only do these ladies leave the audience wanting more SIRENS action (one person kept yelling “play 20 more songs”), the band is excellent at improvisation…during the third to last song, Aran broke one of her guitar strings and Melody quickly retrieved a back-up instrument. Without missing a beat, Muffy, Deanne and Michelle continued as a trio until Melody and Aran sauntered back on stage. Valentine’s Day never sounded so sweet! -- Jacquie TrostLabels: The Sirens
High Heels, thongs, fishnets, strip tease's. These are things most men dream of on a daily basis. But this is 2004 and we must now admit women do too. And maybe JUST AS MUCH. Internet sensation THE SUICIDE GIRLS paid a visit to our ‘fair city of sin’ last nite, and MOTORCITYROCKS was there.

Six bands, one cold February 6, 2004 night. If anything was gonna warm yer bones, this was the show. Outside, in the cold hollow's of Detroit's allies, rat's scurried for food, but a few steps down inside the SHELTER, Gibsons' jammed and amps hummed. Headlined by cover upstarts THE FONDA'S, the event hosted by 89x's Kelly Brown was one of the years best so far.
organized the event. Lead singer Therese was reminiscent of old school Janis Joplin meets Grace Slick - and had the pipes to prove it. Their harder edged "garage sound" was a great pick me up after the mellower entry by the Judys. Rhythmic drums by Sean (also of the Chasers), and basslines rounded out by Bruce (also of Planet of Fun), the band opened for Detroit City Council at the Magic Bag this past Saturday.
Now 9:45, local favs THE MUGGS batted next. Bassist turned keyboardist Tony Denardo's heavy ivories attack, perfectly compliments Danny (The Paybacks) Metric's Gibson song and dance. Their "White Boy Blues" is a great reminder of the power behind this super trio that never disappoints. With Danny leading the way in his Mickey Dolenz t-shirt, you knew it was going to be a fun time with The Mugg's. Bless them for getting back together!
the stage next. Howling Jim Morrison-esque vocals, and Roxy Music melodies made them a most enjoyable show. I love it when bands take interest in appearance, and the Valentinos don't disappoint. Not enough bands focus on image, and its refreshing to see.
