HEY HEY HOLLYWOOD

Those clever folks over at ABC television brought a little Detroit rock to the Academy Awards by using the Paybacks' song "Hollywood".

A new documentary on the making of Cold Mountain features Jack White talking about his role in the film and singing a couple of tunes. It's available for download at Triple Tremelo.

While Back in Spades were busy amusing the clientele at Jon Jon's in Warren, their song "Detroit Slums" got some airplay on Little Steven's Underground Garage and Little Steven himself dubbed it as "the coolest song of the week."

Yet another article on the Von Bondies this time Brian McCollum of the Free Press takes his turn. Oh wait, here's another article courtesy of the NY Times.(you'll have to register to read it though). If you still need to know more about the Von Bondies this morning don't worry because Venus Magazine has got it covered. Some links via Miss Moderange. Ok I'll just throw in another article on the band for good measure.

Concert Review: The Come Ons @ Lager House

George Papanikos“Frank Sinatra after a gallon of French liquor.” That’s how George Papanikos described his new musical venture. George crooned like no other, while Dr. Fulvio Lonardo tickled the ivories of the keyboard. Dressed dapperly in black ties and pants, the duo hit the stage for a 20 minute set at the Lager House this past Friday night. Reminiscent of the lounge acts of yesteryear, and piano bars of today, George and the Good Doctor gave a performance that one person described as “heart melting”. The mellow sound put you at ease, and George’s stage presence kept your eyes glued to the stage. Although the music was not what one might expect to hear at the Lager House, it was truly a treat to hear a smooth voice backed by the softness of a piano.

Although Mr. Papanikos is known for singing with French pop group Bisou Bisou, “Ne me Quitte pas” was the only French song sung this evening. The set ended in true Sinatra-style – a wonderful rendition of Fly Me to The Moon. As George so eloquently put it, “Viva la doctor.”

Up next were the New Alcindors (named after Lew “Kareem Abdul-Jabbar” Alcindor), anNew Alcindors outfit from Pittsburgh. The band was an eclectic mix of musicians, playing a 60’s soul, sometimes funk, sound. Christopher, our photographer extraordinaire, described them as “the Archies meets the Ventures”. The group commonly consists of a bassist (Bill Julin), guitarist (Kurt Edwards), drummer (Shaun Gilmour) and organist (Jennifer Baron). At this show, a trumpet and a trombone joined the New Alcindors, providing a heavy brass sound to a number of the songs. The group let the music speak for itself, as few songs included vocals. During the song ‘Black Jesus’, the horns sat out, and the quartet picked up the tempo and encouraged the audience to clap along. Although the band was not my cup of tea, they definitely knew how to entertain the crowd.

Next up were the Come Ons. Deanne’s heavenly voice provided a mellow, ethereal start, as she sang ‘Blushing’, the first song of the set. Throughout the performance, Deanne’s voice mixed well to the strong drum and guitar beats. During the second song, “Higher”, the group, with a special guest guitarist from Olympia, Washington, picked up the tempo. The entire Come Ons set was stellar – great sound and superb vocals. But, the highlight of the night, were the special guests appearances. First, Kate O’Hara - who, along with Deanne makes up Sunshine Doray - joined the Come Ons for a rendition of Donna Summer’s “I Feel Love”. The song and performance were AMAZING! It was done with an 80’s synth vibe, and Deanne and Kate’s voices blended together perfectly - very polished performance. The song had the entire crowd dancing and was one of the best surprises of the evening. Next, ‘The Boy Who Invented Rap' - the always entertaining esQuire - joined the stage - with his baby sister, Erika in tow. The duo joined the Come Ons for two songs – finishing with a rousing rendition of Beyonce’s “Crazy in Love”. The song was performed mostly by Deanne and Erika, but in true esQuire style, “Q” chimed in with a signature rap only he could pull off.

Concert Review Troy Gregory & The Stepsisters, Bisou Bisou @ Club Bart

Troy Gregory & The StepsistersAny Having recently yucked it up on a Wednesday (see ROMANTICS review), I saw no reason to whoop it up on a Tuesday. With faithful Michelle, my chauffeur for the night, I headed off to meet up with fellow MCR Jacquie to catch Bisou Bisou. I've had several run ins with this French pop posse so far, each time I ended up missing their set. I came so close to seeing them on Valentines Day though...so imagine my surprise when they were still setting up when I got there! Having never been to Club Bartin Ferndale, I was pleasantly surprised. Its lounge style decor was well suited for tonight's line up. But I have to admit, a stage behind the bar - literally...may have to re-think that one. Still, both bands gave it a hella try. Bisou Bisou kicked off with their trademark French lyrics front and center. You gotta give it to them - it's damn original. While my ears fought to get a grasp on the lyrics, my feet started tapping.

Yes, with this trio led by George Papanikos and Jackie O, you definitely get caught up in the shoe gazing right away if you let yourself. It really was fun and I enjoyed every bit, ESPECIALLY the instrumental riffing. I think this is the most untapped market, and perhaps Bisou could spearhead a movement - as several bands of note have ridden the groove-alternative wave to a full-on crest. With new drummer ALVA EDISON on hand to keep perfect time, without overwhelming the two guitars - it made for one downright enjoyable set. Alva is an accomplished musician (he first caught my ear on the superb SOLEDAD BROTHERS live at the GOLD DOLLAR cd - where he played sax), and it's cool to see him comfortable in that skin. -Christopher Chouinard

BRRRRREAKING NEWS: IGGY POP @ CPOP!

Okay fine, not exactly breaking news since this went down a few weeks ago, but we think these photos are cool enough that you won't even notice we're covering it again with a better photo spread. Plus, don't forget that you've got a few more days remaing to check out the Fun House Art Show.

Concert Review: The Fags @ Magic Bag

The FagsBLOWN AWAY! The Fags have blown the minds of another round of rock fans with their awesome brand of power pop. A packed crowd jammed into the Magic Bag on Saturday night to catch John Speck and The Fags.

Eyes and ears were thrilled with Speck rocking out on not one, but two "Flying V's" - one on loan from former Paybacks' guitarist Marco Delicato. The Fags

The set opened with The Fags' hit "Truly, Truly". It was a while before another familiar tune surfaced as the band tried out some hot new material. MCR is told that a new 7" single is on the way and a full-length may be hitting stores "sooner than later." Good news for power pop aficionados everywhere. The band will also be playing the Idol Records showcase at SXSW on March 17.

Opening the show was new rockin' act Back in Spades. No band should be allowed to have TWO absolutely incredible guitarists! Having so much guitar chops on one stage sometimes ends up in a giant mush of sound, but Steve Palmer and Jackson Smith manage to interweave riffs beautifully. Besides, Jackson has come up with the coolest pants in town twice this month! -Ryan Sult

Avatars Record Release Party This Saturday

The Avatars are unleashing their highly-anticipated debut single this Saturday night at the Belmont in Hamtramck. Major buzz has been flying around the Motor City about this hot new Ann Arbor act and it's going to spread like wildfire as they link up with pals The Von Bondies to tour the Midwest. The word is even creeping across the Atlantic after Jason Stollsteimer named them as a band he really loves.

This show also features Saturday Looks Good To Me and is a birthday bash for Eric Stollsteimer (Elevations) and Avatars guitarist Charlie Lorenzi. Who knows, maybe there will even be cake!

CHEW ON THIS: JAWBONE

One man, a 12 volt car battery, guitar and harp. You may recall seeing Jawbone (aka Bob Zabor) propped up in a chair strumming in front of the Magic Stick. Soon, you'll also hear him on the BBC. Recently championed by the BBC's influential personality John Peel, Jawbone will be in the studio for a Peel Session on April 14. In the works is a 7" single on the UK's Rex Records (who have championed many hot Detroit bands). You can catch his unique act this Friday at Small's or the following Saturday at the Hamtramck Blowout. For those of you in the UK, there will be a few London shows during the middle of April.

EASY TO LIKE: THE HARD LESSONS

Catchy tunes and fun times are what you'll learn about when you pick up this swanky new piece of vinyl from The Hard Lessons. This hot three-piece has been tearing up the D lately, playing gigs with Saturday Looks Good To Me, Demolition Doll Rods, The Valentinos, The Elevations... well, just about everyone. Last week found them opening for the Von Bondies along with The Avatars in their hometown of Lansing (polaroids on their website). MCR's sneaky spies have also caught them under the sly moniker Erik Estrada Blues Enchilada... those disguises didn't fool us guys! The vinyl will be out soon and we highly reccomend checking it out. For more, stop by www.thehardlessons.com.

Damn Vandals

Apparently someone's not a big fan of Joe Louis and felt the need to paint the big fist down on Jefferson. Didn't anyone notice 2 guys painting this big monument?

The NY Post talks with Jason from the Von Bondies about the new record which the Post thinks is called Pawn Shoppe Man.

NME readers send the Von Bondies questions and we learn that the band is into The Avatars and Valentinos and that Carrie is good at physics.

In even more Von Bondies news, the band is set to tape an appearance on Last Call with Carson Daly tomorrow in NYC. The episode will run on Thursday March 4th. Other guests scheduled for that night are Damon Wayans and Anna Paquin.

Concert Review: The Romatics @ The Machine Shop

"Hump" day isn't generally the day to rock, but in this case I had to make an exception. After sitting in on the Yahoo chat with THE ROMANTICS last Sunday, I knew this was going to be one hell of a show. The last gig The Romantics did locally was at the Emerald Theater in Mount Clemens. With buzz about new CD steadily increasing, and a stellar support line up, I rushed out to rock and rock I did.

After a torching warm up (for the lucky winners of a radio promotion by WCRZ Classic Rock ) ...I spoke briefly to THE ROMANTICS lead singer Wally Palmar. Wally was enthusiastic about the positive word of mouth the Rolling Stone review had garnered the band, and was upbeat in the momentum the tour will bring, especially to a hometown crowd.

Local hero's DIXIE HISTLER were the first band up, and I knew right away this show was going to be a blast. It's rare to see a band use a harmonica, and that's one of the reasons I love THE ROMANTICS. It's even more rare to see TWO bands use the harp, and lead singer Dann knew how to wield one mean ass whistle. Having seen the band over a year ago - I quickly remembered why they are so popular. Standout songs "Long Gone Baby" make this southern-styled rock band no "one trick pony." Few acts have a groove so well associated with the Allman Brothers or Lynard Skynard (whom they recently opened for), but Dixie does. Together with Clay, Chris, Sean and Eric - Dann made sure they got the joint jumping. I am very excited to catch them as a headliner; if their opening set is this tight, imagine their longer set!

THE CHESTERFIELD KINGS came complete with their own comic book. You know a band is serious when they come wielding artwork, peg jeans and 007 guitars. Yes, you heard right, CK's Andy Babiuk sports a JAMES BOND Vox styled teardrop guitar while tearing through their tunes. It fits right in with their retro sounding vintage gear and songbook. Essentially, they are Rochester, New York's version of our Romantics - they were a great fit to the show as well. With over 20 years of catalog, they felt at ease on stage, and lead singer Greg Prevost brought memories of the Trash Brats' antics to my teary eyes. Bassist Mike and drummer Paul rounded out the band as they tore through their new album THE LEGENDARY SOUNDS OF THE CHESTERFIELD KINGS. Make sure you check these hepcats out, dig? They are well worthy of your D-town rock n' Roll attention.

I had only planned to catch a few songs of The Romantics set, being as I was leaving for Houston, Texas the next morning, but 'twas not to be. How could I have left the real deal that stepped onto that stage next? In front of a packed standing room crowd...THE ROMANTICS owned Flint. The hits came right out of the gate and were complimented by the new tunes off 61/49, the new CD. Out came the dual guitars of Coz Canler and the aforementioned Wally Palmar, backed up by a fierce new drumbeat supplied by new member Brad Elvis (filling in for Clem Burke, currently in the studio with Blondie). The excitement helped rev up bassist/guitarist Mike Skill, who led the attack into several longer jams. The stand out for me had to be the extended version of "Devil In Me " off the new cd. Twisted into a boogie worthy of Clapton, this new version turned the Machine Shop crowd into a giant Scary-oke Bar by the time they rolled into "What I like About You."

A real rock show by REAL rock bands. No turntables for these veterans. From opener to closer, THE place to be was The Machine Shop on this fine nite. Of course, my car ride home and a full ten minutes of shuteye nearly cost me my flight... but that's another story. But you know what? It was worth it. In the words of THE ROMANTICS... "Out Of My Mind...and Into my Head!"

DETROIT HIPSTER CITY

It's official, Detroit is the "it" city. The proof is in the shows. JORDAN KNIGHT has already played the Motor City once in 2004 and he's already booked again - this time at the Blind Pig on March 6. If those two appearances don't persuade you that Detroit is the new Brooklyn, check this. 2 LIVE CREW played a top secret, elite only gig at the Toy Chest (for those of you out of the cultural loop, the Toy Chest is a strip bar on the Detroit/Dearborn border - "legs and eggs at midnight"). Now that's what I call an outright hipster invasion!!

Back In Spades In The House

The Lager House on Friday night that is. We've been telling ya'll to see these guys for a while now and if you haven't done it yet... shame on you. Don't slit your wrists just yet though, you'll have another chance when they open for The Fags at the Magic Bag this Saturday.

Concert Review: The Sirens, Bisou Bisou, The Valentinos @ Smalls

In true Valentine’s Day style, BISOU BISOU, THE VALENTINO’S and THE SIRENS rocked Small's on Saturday night. The stage was decked out with special V-Day tapestries, and everyone – including the crowd – was dressed in style (not many rockers can get away with wearing a tutu, but now I know at least on Detroit lady can).

Unfortunately the evening got off to a bad start – we were running late and missed most of BISOU BISOU’S set. We did catch the last two songs, and if it was any indication of the rest of the set, it was a good show. As Detroit’s only French pop group, Jackie O (thanks for the Blow Pops), George (thanks for the Bon Bon’s) and Alva, did not disappoint.

Up next were THE VALENTINO’S – a mysterious band, as no one seems to know much about them. What I do know: 1. they were quite dapperly dressed, 2. they had a great sound and 3. I felt I needed to join the rest of the crowd and dance. I’m sure Detroit will hear much more about this well-dressed group in the future.

Around midnight, the rockin’ ladies known as THE SIRENS took the stage. As usual, the quintet was dressed in one-of-a-kind outfits, expressly decorated in honor of the ‘special day’ – I can’t wait to see what these hot rock chicks will don next. As a female, I love to see an all-girl band that can go toe-to-toe with the best of them, and THE SIRENS are no exception. The band played to a full house, and rocked out in true SIRENS style. Not your typical ‘cover band’ – THE SIRENS take each and every song they play, and make it their own. Muffy’s stage presence is amazing, her laugh is infectious and her voice is one of a kind. Plus, she has a beer holster on her mic stand – what could be better? Melody, one of the best female guitarists I’ve seen in a long time, was rockin out while wearing a tiara. Bassist Michelle Lanoo, and newest member, guitarist Aran Ruth, looked smashing in their outfits – and rocked throughout the entire show. With a special Valentine’s Day message on her drum set, Deanne’s drumming was stellar. Not only do these ladies leave the audience wanting more SIRENS action (one person kept yelling “play 20 more songs”), the band is excellent at improvisation…during the third to last song, Aran broke one of her guitar strings and Melody quickly retrieved a back-up instrument. Without missing a beat, Muffy, Deanne and Michelle continued as a trio until Melody and Aran sauntered back on stage. Valentine’s Day never sounded so sweet! -- Jacquie Trost

Concert Review: Suicide Girls Burlesque Show with Bedford Drive, Bloom @ Magic Stick

High Heels, thongs, fishnets, strip tease's. These are things most men dream of on a daily basis. But this is 2004 and we must now admit women do too. And maybe JUST AS MUCH. Internet sensation THE SUICIDE GIRLS paid a visit to our ‘fair city of sin’ last nite, and MOTORCITYROCKS was there.

I headed out round 9:30 with the (poor) assumption the show wouldn't start until 11-ish, but I had guessed incorrectly. With Real Detroit's write up on our local Spag and Helle's Belle's Burlesque troops this week, and erotic Dirty Show opening, I had misjudged, and thought the crowd would arrive fashionably late. Seems the majority of the 18 and over crowd had begun lining up at 7pm!!! Upon arriving at 10-ish, I knew trouble was in town as it took about 15 minutes to find parking. Crowds were seen crossing Woodward Avenue in the Stick's direction, and I KNEW the show had sold out. Heading up the stairs I heard the first band in swing, bummed I was going to miss the rock...I hurriedly encountered mega-security man Red at the door, grabbed my four whiskey sours and bum rushed the stage. At first glance through the crowd, you'd think it was a rock fashion show. The threads were out in full effect, reminding me of how well-dressed our local rock scene really is.

Southgate’s very own BEDFORD DRIVE was in mid set and the crowd was enjoying every bit of it. Lead singer and guitarist Scott Anger had told me later that night of how they had won the opening slot in an online voting poll-and they deserved it. In his own words, the band is a blend of guitar driven, radio friendly melodic rock...that you can move to. He was right, the audience simply loved this band. Bassist Michelle Bojanowski added a lot to that vibe, adding her warm vocals and heavy backbeat to Ryan Looney's drum beats. I always love a "we're having fun" feeling when bands play, and guitarist Ed Sertage made me remember that motto. The back and forth banter between Ed and Scott really made this one fine up-and-coming band to notice. Well worth a repeat listen, and viewing, without a doubt.

Touring band BLOOM had accompanied the Show on several gigs already, and unfortunately added Detroit to its list. Unfortunately because of the somewhat hostile audience, who at this point were definitely in want of some leg and bosom action, they were not too politely received as the next band up. Mark Stuart's distinctive vocals have quite an edge - his voice sounds at home on the bands guitar-laden, blues-influenced tunes. Will McGinniss adds a solid, equalizing bass line to their songs, giving BLOOM some sonically thick muscles to flex. I was pleased with their sound, style and stage presence. Too bad the constant hecklers had to upset their rhythm, this is one band that deserves a DETROIT apology and warm welcome second stab. Come back soon BLOOM. (not to be confused with Detroit's Bloom)

Around midnight, the hot, wet dripping sex oozed out of the back drapes of the Stick and took to the Stage. Having seen our own local troops, as well as legendary Betty Page heir Dita Von Tease, I had high hopes given the websites huge cult following. While not exactly let down (hey, I am single after all!) I can't say I wasn't a bit disappointed. I had hoped for a more Prop oriented show, but was basically left to the skills and bodies of the troops. From the card girls ribbing for us to "SCREAM LOUDER BITCHES!" to the various acts, it was certainly titillating, but folding chairs and an umbrella or two don't fair well against our local queens of the scene. Key standouts were the schoolgirl catfight and the Pabst Blue Ribbon beer bath...but the winner had to be the homage to old Quentin Tarintino. Folding chair center stage held the cop-garbed hottie, as her captor danced around her to the tune of Reservoir Dogs "Stuck in the Middle”. Yes, the lesbian overtones worked on this scribe, and I would have to admit to being aroused in all the right ways. A riotess send off, including turning the entire audience into a human chocolate sundae, complete with Redi Whip and Hershey's Syrup, sent the audience home horny and sticky. Driving home left me thinking when’s the next burlesque show? And if anyone is unsure of her merits on becoming a burgeoning Burlesque dancer, they can simply give me a ring. I would be more than happy to review their act - and take pictures of course. ;) Wink. Wink.

Detroit ultra-hip art gallery CPOP has been filled with artwork by Iggy Pop and the Stooges as well as creations of their punk rock legend friends. A hipster-packed opening was held on Saturday, February 7. Iggy was there in the flesh for a VIP shindig held from 6-8pm. MCR pal Lisa H. says "He looked really good - but so much shorter than I expected - I always thought him a tall, lanky dude...he was a little pin-striped wearin' dapper man saturday nite..." The gallery opened to the public for a reception between 8 and 12pm. Lines of art buyers, Detroit rockers and even Kirk Gibson of D Tigers fame extended around the block for much of the evening.

Curated by High Priestess of Detroit Punk, Niagara, artwork by the following rockers is on display: Iggy Pop, Ron Asheton, Scott Asheton, Joey Ramone, Dee Dee Ramone, Mark Mothersbaugh (Devo), Thurston Moore and Kim Gordon (Sonic Youth), Billy Gibbons (ZZ Top), King Buzzo (The Melvins), photographer Bob Gruen, MC5, Kembra Pfahler (The Voluptous Horror of Karen Black), John Holmstrom (Punk Magazine), Jerry Vile (Boners, Dirty), Ivan Suvanjieff (Ramords, The 27, Detroit Punks), photographer Leni Sinclair and Niagara.

Six bands, one cold February 6, 2004 night. If anything was gonna warm yer bones, this was the show. Outside, in the cold hollow's of Detroit's allies, rat's scurried for food, but a few steps down inside the SHELTER, Gibsons' jammed and amps hummed. Headlined by cover upstarts THE FONDA'S, the event hosted by 89x's Kelly Brown was one of the years best so far.

First band up - THE GIANT JUDYS, an import from Cincinnati Ohio. Seen recently at Small's, they were well received enough to warrant a return to the Motor City. A welcome classic sound - which reminds me of R.E.M. meets The Replacements - they got the ball rolling at about 7:30. The best part of their set was the last tune.....keyboards are a welcome addition to many of the bands these days - and this was no exception. A well rounded sound and great harmonics, along with the best one liners around ("We have shirts for sale, but we're too lazy to put up over on the merch table......track us down, we need to eat breakfast") made them a welcome warm up.

Next up was the GT-40's,headed by lead guitarist/singer Frank Mitchell, who organized the event. Lead singer Therese was reminiscent of old school Janis Joplin meets Grace Slick - and had the pipes to prove it. Their harder edged "garage sound" was a great pick me up after the mellower entry by the Judys. Rhythmic drums by Sean (also of the Chasers), and basslines rounded out by Bruce (also of Planet of Fun), the band opened for Detroit City Council at the Magic Bag this past Saturday.

JETTISON RED was up next. If you live in Michigan, you should have seen them by now. Drummer Nicky Stixx (also of the Gore Gore Girls - I sense a multi band trend...) wallops a mean back beat, and the trio of John, Chris and Paul is a sting attack to look out for. One of the more theatric bands of the night, Jettisons dueling attack is one The Doors and The Beatles would be proud of. Very Foo Fighter in structure, their new Tune "Looked to the Sky" is a standout. Jettison Red played at Small's for their cd release party on Saturday.

Now 9:45, local favs THE MUGGS batted next. Bassist turned keyboardist Tony Denardo's heavy ivories attack, perfectly compliments Danny (The Paybacks) Metric's Gibson song and dance. Their "White Boy Blues" is a great reminder of the power behind this super trio that never disappoints. With Danny leading the way in his Mickey Dolenz t-shirt, you knew it was going to be a fun time with The Mugg's. Bless them for getting back together!

Now well under way, THE VALENTINOS...the sharp dressed men of the scene, hit the stage next. Howling Jim Morrison-esque vocals, and Roxy Music melodies made them a most enjoyable show. I love it when bands take interest in appearance, and the Valentinos don't disappoint. Not enough bands focus on image, and its refreshing to see.

Headliners, THE FONDAS took over at 11:00, just as the ice storm outside did likewise. Platinum haired lead singer Julie sashayed through the hits on their new cd, like a vixen. Ex-Cobra Steve Shaw wears his soul on his sleeve, and in his guitar. From the covers, to the originals - this is one band who never disappoints. Surprising the lucky audience (which featured John Szymanski of the Hentchmen and Paybacks, and members of The Sights) with a NEW SONG, their first run through in public. Lucky us, the tune rocked... the people danced, and the ice outside melted.

A great night for rock n roll, for the lucky few who ventured out in the arctic cold of Detroit. This was one night that indeed, the rock came OUT OF THE GARAGE.

DETROIT ROCK IN PRINT

Heralded Detroit author Elmore Leonard has released a new book set here in the D. Mr. Paradise is a murder mystery revolving around two Detroit loft dwellers - one a Victoria's Secret model and the other an escort gal. Look for mentions of Detroit bands The Dirtbombs, The Go and Bantam Rooster. We've also heard whispers that Detroit City Council (DCC) frontman Tom Potter was made into an unamed character.

Speacking of DCC, MCR has learned that Kevin Corrigan on the WB's series Grounded For Life will be fashionably sporting a DCC shirt... hip.

AND... the DCC has added a new guitarist: Duminie Allen. Previous affiliations include Enemy Squad, Soul Clique and none of the than the P-FUNK ALL STARS!
