Best, it was a blast. I'm so in to loud, punk stuff right now. It was so ridiculous and absurd. They used so many amps my ears still hurt. Half the band played without shirts and crazy hats and the other guys just had vests on. Sean the singer (Leaving Rouge/ Holy Fire) was insane. I didn't know he used to play in all these screamy bands, but man could that guy yell with the best of them. I thought he was like all mellow because of LR but apparently he's crazy. He smashed bananas in the guitar player’s face. Then he dumped a whole gas can worth of water on himself. He broke the base off the mic stand, then that got bent in half and eventually broken. He kept putting the mic stand between his legs and stroking it. He had the best outfit. He had dollar bill and a Barbie coming out of his pants. People kept putting money in his pants during the show. I didn't check my batteries and they died, but here are couple snaps.

Over at the Detroit News, Adam Graham takes a look at the Jack White produced Loretta Lynn album Van Lear Rose. In a Letter From Loretta, she explains how the collaboration came about:

After my manager gave me The White Stripes album that they dedicated to me, we became fast friends. I love both Jack and Meg. They came out to the ranch for a visit and I cooked homemade bread and chicken n' dumplings. We did a show together in New York City and soon after, me and Jack got in the studio. We recorded it last June and September in Nashville and had such a great time making it. I tell you that Jack White is quite a producer!

This album sounds a little different from my other ones. You've got to have an open mind 'cause some of these songs have a rock 'n roll sound and the rest are just pure country. I've always thought that a song can bring people together.

LET'S GET RUINED!

As we previously reported, Spike TV brought their pals Atlantic Records out to the Motor City to film sleaze rock sinsations The Ruiners. Rick Ruiner says, "We provided an emergency room worthy performance. Our drummer was pretty mangled - he signed his release form in blood!" Onlookers said the folks from Atlantic and Spike were quite taken with the Ruiners' sleaze-manship and were grabbing all the t-shirts and merch they could carry. We're also told that Kid Rock and Uncle Kracker cheered on the band like they were a local sports team while watching the video. Sugar Ray was on hand as well - the photo above shows Mark from Sugar Ray hangin' with Erik Ruiner. The show is set to air on Spike TV in June. For more on it, check out this month's Rolling Stone.

chasersOne minute an empty theater, the next: packed. Why? The Chasers are one of those rare bands, where even with an 11:30pm Thursday night show, can STILL crowd the room. I kid you not, they rocked the Emerald with a refreshing pop rock sound that few actually do this well. Lead singer Angela Colasanti delivered tight vocals, and a fantastic live show - running, jumping, and dancing like I have not seen any front person do in ages. Backed by a solid band led by Sean Mallare on drums, Mike Thiel on bass, Tony Chambers on rhythm guitar and Steve Battista on lead guitar, The Chasers are consistently one of the few Eastside bands who never let the energy level dip below 9. WOLFBAIT, SPECK-TACULAR NOGOODS, SUPAGROUP

Ahhh, the joys of $1 beer nights … this week, the Lager House saw as solid of a rock show as can be hoped for on a Monday night. The Skeemin’ No Goods opened the night with yet another frantic set of punk-ish blues rock – the highlight of which this time around was a killer take on “Gimme the Gas” that drew quite a bit of hooting and hollering. Show headliners Supagroup (from New Orleans) didn’t disappoint either, as the band held up its end of the night with a surprisingly energetic, guitar-solo filled set of Lynard-Skynard-meets-AC/DC balls out rocking.

Still, though, the real highlight of the night was local Iron Maiden-meets-Pink Floyd-via-Dungeons and Dragons act Wolfbait. The band called out that “the end of man is nigh” before putting on a seemingly arena-rock worthy set while working the crowd into a strange sort of hyperactive tizzy. Guitarist Sagitario actually wore a quiver of arrows during the set, while cloak-clad frontman/guitarist Brian, Son of Darold slunk behind his microphone and let loose some surprisingly impressive vocals. The first half of the set bore a ton of resemblance to Maiden, though Wolfbait did get a bit spacey (and more guitar-solo oriented) on a few later numbers, which gave the set a bit more diversity than one might have expected. Quite possibly the best part of it all was hearing the best ‘gang vocal’ of my entire life, when Wolfbait busted out with the lyric, “We eat pussy ‘til we puke.” Man, screw the Wildhearts – where the hell was Wolfbait at when The Darkness needed a competent opening act a few weeks ago? Seriously. As good old Uncle Grambo would say, Wolfbait = BUZZ. --Mr. Gary

WHAT'S BETTER THAN HEARING THE RUINERS?
Seeing them too, of course! Tomorrow, Spike TV will be in Ferndale to film "the usual fire, motorcycle stunts, random guitar smashing, and jocularity a plenty." The Ruiners will have live performance footage and music from their new, unreleased album on a reality show airing in June. The Ruiners are one of two remaining bands in a nationwide contest. The show focuses around a group of interns competing for an industry job at Atlantic Records. One intern will be responsible for picking one of two bands to perform with Sugar Ray here in Detroit. After the filming, they'll head downtown to meet Sugar Ray (we're told the K.I.D. will be on hand as well), and find out who the winner is. We hear that Spike TV producers found the band after reading about their rowdy Magic Stick show on a Detroit music website.

CHARLIE MURPHY! ENJOY YOURSELF!
cute kids, yoBeing a terrible child is clearly underrated. With sweet electro-dance pumping and booze flowing like the polluted Detroit River, the kids at Les Infants Terrible seemed to be having a blast. The turntables were in the best of hands all night. Adam Lee Miller and Nicola Kuperas (Adult.) got people grooving and even brought in the rockers – Dirtbomb drummer Pat Pantano was on hand to check them out. The scenes were quite interesting as well - the Peacock’s centralized location (basement of the Broderick Building at Woodward & Grand Circus) makes for a continual stream of eclectic stragglers. There was the electro crowd of course, which included Ghostly guru Sam Valenti. Then there were the indie rockers cruising over from the Electric Six show at the Majestic, and Prada-sporting, slightly drunk suburbanites stumbling in from the high cover joints a few doors down like Bleu. Finally there were the struggling rapper types that would wander in for a few minutes, look confused and wander back up the stairs. Mingling wildly throughout the crowd was almost half the All Music Guide staff, including rock scribes Tom Erlewine and Heather Phares – and of course, the man of the evening, Rob Theakston. –Ryan Sult

Concert Review: Electric Six, Back In Spades, Midwest Product @ Majestic theatre

Electric Six Live In Detroit
Electric Six Live In DetroitAnd he’s a government man, A GOVERNMENT MAN! Jam-packed is the only way to describe the Electric Six show at the Majestic Theatre on Friday night. Standing amidst hundreds of kids desperately attempting to continually inch closer to the stage and eagerly awaiting Dick the Dictator, the excitement was tangible. Well, if not tangible, at least audible, with the all ages crowd yelling out their favorite line of E6 poetry like “You must obey the dance commander” and “Stop… CONTINUE!” Of course, it may have been the visual aspect that really sealed the deal. You have to appreciate the “Fire in the taco bell” home-crafted tee (we saw you at the MSU show too by-the-way). Sure, that was good, but the fashion prize goes to the group who jumped a 1970’s Detroit pimp and made off with his wardrobe of extra-wide-collar white polyester suits and oversized faux-gold jewelry.

It can’t be terribly easy to live up to the thoroughly outrageous persona of Electric Six, but with Dick Valentine’s infectious disco-rock sensibility and Zack Shipps’ guitar hero stylistics, the crowd didn’t appear to be disappointed. There have certainly been some trying times since the E6’s rise to international stardom. Only a few weeks after the release of Fire, the band bitterly split and a few new players were brought aboard. Despite the incredible success of the album, their UK-based label dropped them from the roster. It seems that these things have taxed their momentum in some aspects. Showing that they’re pushing forward, they mixed in some new material with the now classic kitschy hits. Greg Baise of the Majestic Theatre pointed out that it was a pretty cool night for the legendary Woodward rock complex since Detroit bands continually frequent the Magic Stick stage, but have never before headlined the Majestic.

Electric Six Live In DetroitBack in Spades turned on the heat by starting off the evening with smoking guitar rock. Bringing the jams with passion, intensity and an incredibly tight sound, the crowd was quickly made aware of the hottest band in Detroit since the MC5. Thus far, they’ve played mostly smaller venues, so it was great to see them in a larger space. Granted, the roof still didn’t have a fighting chance against the sheer volume and amazing guitar licks. They debuted four new, solid songs. Two are yet untitled and the others are “I'm Not Fighting Anymore” and “Ain’t No Heart”. They also debuted a talented new bass player, Nick Bataran.

Following Back in Spades could be about the toughest task conceivable. The evening certainly would have had a better flow if Midwest Product had been put on first, but nonetheless, they put on a stellar set of techno beats layered on a bed of lush, digital sound waves. Seeing them live helps answer the question that always arises when listening to their records: “Wow, that’s cool, how the hell did they do that?” Well, it helps somewhat anyway. -- Ryan Sult

Since the "LAST SONG" light is being repaired at the Elbow Room (downtown Ypsilanti, MI),...we have devised a more sinister way of telling bands their TIME IS UP: After an electrical inspection, a ground leak was discovered and optimized to deliver 110 volts on demand to the offending band's singer. This is attained through the Shure SM 58 microphone / behavioral modification device (hooked to a loose hairdryer). And if a band goes further past its alloted 30 set time, then we dump the 30 gallon bucket of goats blood onto the entire band and open up the 440v circuit under the new stage.

Down Down Down in Detroit - All I Did Was Die

Bar Crawl

colicAfter spending about an hour at Ferndale’s Magic Bag on Friday night, I’m a bit confused as to why MCR gets so much mail complaining about the fact that Colic gets buzz around the local scene. Sorry to say, kids, and I’m sure I’ll lose any street cred that I may have had (which admittedly, probably wasn’t ever very much in the first place), but myself and Ryan got a chance to check out Colic’s set on Friday night, and the band put on a pretty smoking live show (Please direct all hatemail to Mr. Gary at derfsucks@hotmail.com). The band gave off a few different vibes, as the songs were all catchy, although the band rocked more than anything else. Live, “She’s A Gun” came off sounding like a modernized version of Catherine Wheel, though both “You Don’t Know Why” and “Falling Asleep at the Wheel” were catchy enough (in a Cheap Trick sort of way) that they wound up stuck in our heads later on that night. Both of us were really impressed after having seen them live, though I’m sure the super-scenester element of Detroit will gladly give me 200 quick reasons why I’m wrong (again, see e-mail address listed above).

The MCR train also made a stop at the Magic Stick Friday night to help the guys in The Kingsnakes celebrate the release of their debut CD, Supernatural Disaster. Tommy Mann looked every bit the part of the rock-and-roll singer, with his long hair waving and his big belt-buckle shining in the lights when he leaned back and wailed on almost every song. While Mann was definitely the showman of the band, lead guitarist Elliot Moses stole the show with his tight (and frequent) guitar solos, the best of which culminated a guitar solo stand-off with special guest Danny Methric of The Muggs. Hints of Led Zeppelin, Mountain and AC/DC were abound during The Kingsnakes’ set, which basically cemented the band’s reputation as a great band to see on a good old fashioned beer drinking rock-and-roll night out.

Speaking of Supernatural Disasters...
...big ups to everyone who made it out Big Matt’s 26th birthday celebration this past Saturday night at the Town Pump Tavern …
