Concert Review: The Go @ The Painted Lady

The Go proved to be too much rock for Hamtramck to handle! At the grand opening bash for The Painted Lady, a new bar occupying the space on Jacob Street formerly home to Lili's, the cops raided the stage, stopped the drunken dancing and eventually silenced the screaming guitars. Apparently the The Painted Lady's residential neighbors were not as amused as the rest of us were with the Go's impressive solid wall of amps. One disillusioned drunk wondered, "Is that the stage or am I at Junkyard Guitars?" It definately did not help that the bar now allowed people to use the front entrance rather than the back alley sneak-in routine of Lili's days. This basically leaves patrons stepping onto the stage and propels the wrath of the PA onto the neighbors' front porch.

With original Go member Dion Fischer on guitar and Matthew Smith manning the Moog, the band opened with a jammed out rendition of "Meet Me At The Movies." The wall of amps was loud enough to be heard all the way over to the Hamtramck Police Department. At first it seemed cool that several of Hamtown's Best were inspired to roll up in a few squad cars... "grab a beer, you pigs!" The Go then started into "Brain Damage" and encouraged the craziness to ensue. Amidst the chaos, singer Bobby Harlow found himself passed out between a pair of giant amps for a few minutes and then re-emerged to briefly make out with a blonde who had somehow drifted onto the stage. Likely struggling to hear themselves think, the cops made their way onstage and yelled something into bassist John Krautner's ear. He looked mildly amused and kept right on playing. He must have suggested they consult Harlow, who was again lying on the floor. This forced the big cop to lean over and try to reason with him. Didn't take, of course - Harlow stood up, looked annoyed and gently nudged him back. All of this encourged the band to jam out harder and longer than ever. Eventually the law decided cutting the power was the answer, and that was the end of that. Perhaps the blame lies on the shoulders of Mark Ramrod himself, but rock n' roll debauchery has clearly made a triumphant return to Detroit Rock City. - Ryan N. Sult

...CONCERT EVENTS AS ART PROJECTS...
To Live and Shave in LAToday marks the date of what should be one of the most interesting touring shows to come through Detroit this year, as To Live and Shave in LA makes a performance stop at the Detroit Art Space tonight. The most current incarnation of this abstract musical art project includes production/guitar guru Don Fleming providing guitars, synth work and backing vocals, and also Michigan's own Andrew W.K. giving up some drumming and vocals, as well. The fur-clad Wolfman Band opens. This one should be energetic and crazy, if nothing else.

An Open Letter to the Rock 'n' Roll Hall of Fame
Dear Friends,

We, the people of Detroit and fans of the music emanating from this gnarly burg wanna tug on your coat for a minute about the yearly nominations to the Rock 'n' Roll Hall of Fame. Painfully, we notice that in a year where you've made an intelligent nomination - the Stooges - you have overlooked, bypassed or otherwise forgotten about another major Detroit Wheel - Mitch Ryder. AGAIN.

What gives? Mitch Ryder + the Detroit Wheels were THE band the Rolling Stones cited as a huge influence in the mid-60s. Who did Otis Redding play with on his very last gig? Mitch Ryder + the Detroit Wheels. Who was the last person to play at the World Trade Center? Mitch Ryder. Mitch's influence can be heard on literally tons of vinyl issued over the years from Detroit Rock City. But still, you act like he doesn't exist. Is it because you're based in Cleveland, known as The Mistake by the Lake? For fuck's sake, you inducted the biggest groupie in the world last year - Jann Wenner - and you didn't even NOMINATE Mitch Ryder? Shame on you, clean your fucking ears out, and quit being such fucking stupid pricks. You're an embarrassment to all that is rock 'n' roll.

Album Review: Skeemin' NoGoods (Self Titled)

Well, there's sure nothing fancy about the Skeemin' NoGoods. Sure, John Speck (The Fags, Hoarse) occasionally lets his fingers wander up and down his fretboard for extended periods of time, but those solos don't really seem flashy or overly technical; they're more like the equivalent of some frantic spastic fit brought on by three days of constant caffeine consumption. Rhythm section members Ron Sakowski (The Necros, Easy Action) and Chuck Burns (Speedball, Seduce) lay down solid tracks that don't go off into progressive epics; sure, the drums pop all over the place like fireworks on the Fourth of July, and the bass -- well, alright, in all honesty, the main grumble to have about this recording is that the bass seems practically muted, really making it a non-issue ... Still, for the 28-minute lifespan of this recording, Speck, Sakowski and Burns play the best kind of rock-and-roll that exists - the dirty, nasty, slinky kind that takes simple, four-chord guitar-crunching, puts it over a pounding rhythm, and then totally goes over the top with liberal doses of nasty guitar solos and highly intense, yelled-but-still-kinda-sung vocals.

This ain't MTV's bullshit rock-and-roll here; this is Lemmy Kilmister's rock-and-roll - the kind born of nights of chain smoking, beer swilling, whiskey drinking and barroom brawling, all set to a steady soundtrack of Motorhead and conversations about who's got what tatooed where. All three of these guys have been involved in various elements of rock in the past (hell, Speck's actually one of the best goddamned pop songwriters Detroit's ever seen - the guy's had solid hooks pouring out of his ass for years in every band he's written for, and he's currently tossing out gems as part of The Fags); somehow, though, none of that matters when it comes to the Skeemin' NoGoods, because the only element present here is a good old ass-kicking for any set of ears lucky enough to be listening.

Like all good rock-and-roll, the Skeemin' NoGoods are frayed around the edges. There are no ballads here. There are no ornate rhythmic changes. Everything on this disc relies solely on intensity. Admittedly, the tracks tend to blur together at times; the album kicks off with "I Want Something" and "Politicians," and it's really hard to tell where one starts and the other begins upon first listen. "I Don't Like You" actually goes the route of including the dreaded, "1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8" count-along lyric (in the middle of the song, even).

Imagine spending two days locked in a room with two close friends, a handful of AC/DC albums, a gallon of whiskey, a carton of smokes, and three cases of the cheapest beer possible ... Now think about the fact that this album is the direct result of an entire lifetime of that behavior. That's right - 28 minutes of dirty, alcohol-soaked, four-chord crunch and blazing guitar solo goodness.

So, why, pray tell, can the statement still be made that something so rudimentary is still vibrant and necessary? Simple. This, my friends, is balls-out, no frills, all-out, 'fuck you let's rock' music. This is the kind of stuff that's playing when beer bottles are shattering against brick walls, setting up the perfect atmopshere for fists to be flying at faces in all the right bars in all the wrong places. Go put down a few drinks and then listen to the disgustingly great mid-album combo of "Downtown" and "Gimme the Gas" to feel a quick blast of the spirit of Detroit. Leave your shitty job at the end of the workday and speed home, drumming on the steering wheel and yelling along to "Punch the Clock" for some rock-and-roll catharsis.

Can't hear the bass in the mix? That sucks, but it doesn't matter. Less than a half-hour long? Shit, man - just play it two or three times in a row a few times a day and get your money's worth. Listening to the Skeemin' NoGoods is like putting Lemmy, Angus Young and The Ramones in a blender and then pouring the contents into the stereo. Bounce around, play air guitar, bang your head, yell along, throw a fist in the air, pound a beer, do the Pogo ... The list is endless. Whatever it is you decide to do, just know that this disc will make you want to do it that much fucking harder. - Gary Blackwell

EVENT NOTES FROM TIME STEREO: Nepal is a super small third world country located deep in the Himalayas, nestled between Tibet and India. Extreme poverty allows poor health conditions resulting in a greater incidence of deafness in children from basic childhood illnesses. In a major city like KATHMANDU, there are a few sign language schools but in the countryside, isolated deaf children are still language-less. Four years of fighting-off attacks from maoist rebels have left the already-limited government resources depleted. This concert will help fund the construction of a school in Sindhuli which is in the middle hills of the Eastern half of the country.

...MAGGOT BRAINING GENERATION AFTER GENERATION...
Back when George Clinton's Funkadelic was a vehicle for abject weirdness and searing funk-rock jams, guitarist Eddie Hazel quietly established himself as one of the era's most formidable players. Tragically underrated during his day, Hazel's riffings were the basis of Funkadelic's monumental original trio of albums - the brightest of which were showcased in the fairly well-known piece, "Maggot Brain."

After Hazel's passing in 1992, a cult audience of sorts seemed to develop for his works. Hazel's few existing solo recordings have always been rather hard to come by, though today marks the CD re-release date of Hazel's 1977 solo album, Games, Dames and Guitar Things (courtesy of Rhino Handmade). As bonus tracks, Rhino's tacked on four of Hazel's 1975 demo tracks that had earlier seen minimum exposure as the posthumous Jams From the Heart EP. According to the label, only 5000 individually numbered copies are being published - so if you're the type that's interested in such things, it might not be a bad idea to check out the label's Eddie Hazel info page for more details about the re-release.

FUCK TELEVISION.

Eventually, programming is going to get so bad that we're all going wind up selling our televisions to buy guitars and four-track recorders in an attempt to fill our free time with something vaguely creative and worthwhile. Until then, though, check out the 'inside scoop' on a few new television shows.

Then again, folks with basic cable can always just say, "Screw conventional reality show/faux reality show/sitcom programming crap," and check out Cartoon Network's Adult Swim line-up. Sure, it's corporate non-conventionalism ... but it's still weird, irreverant, and damned funny to boot.
