MILLIONS OF BRAZILIANS

Weekend Lowdown – June 29, 2005

There are a ton of bands playing this weekend, most of them are for free at Tastefest. Here are some of MCR’s picks for the weekend.

Thursday
Nathaniel Mayer and the Shanks-8PM-New Center Council Jazz and Blues Stage. He’s a legend and has some damn fine songs for some ass shaking.
Lee Marvin Computer Arm-6pm-Pure Detroit Stage- These guys are spastic and have a rock and roll trumpeter. What more could one want?
Joe Phillips-7pm- Metro Times Stage- I saw him once and he opened with a Whiskeytown song. He had me at hello.
Space Heaters-8pm- Metro Times Stage- Never actually seen them before but the other bands these guys are/used to be in are pretty sweet so we’re assuming they are some sort of supergroup.
Ty Stone-9pm-Metro Times Stage- We saw him once sing on a chair in a bar and it sounded pretty good. I assume he would sound even better on an actual stage.

Friday
Whirlwind Heat-7:30-Pure Detroit Stage-Moog synthesizers are pretty cool and so are weird noises.
Electric 6-9-Pure Detroit Stage-”You must obey the dance commander
Givin’ out the order for fun,” enough said.
Paybacks-DIA-6:30 & 8:30- I saw the White Stripes once at the DIA and it sounded loud, echo-y and kind of hard to tell what was going on. However shortly afterwards they became huge international stars.
Electric 6 Wastefest After Party w/ Erik Estrada Blues Enchillada/HafLife/ Johnny Headband and Dick Valentine and Tait Nucleus on the turntables- Belmont.

Saturday
NY Dolls-8 – Motorcity Casino Main Stage- If you didn’t have the $40 to see them last month see them for free at Tastefest. Make sure to yell out “Hot Hot Hot” over and over again.
Hentchmen-6:30-Pure Detroit Stage- I work with one of the guys in the band, he said I should go, so I will.
Brazillian Girls- 8:30-Pure Detroit Stage
Great Lakes Myth Society- 9-Metro Times Stage-
John Mellencamp/ John Fogerty-DTE- If you love freedom you will be at this show.
Saturday, Sunday & Monday-Holy Shit Fest 2005 at the 2500 Club- These bands will make you want to punch someone in the face. Although we don’t suggest doing that, we’re just warning you.
Paradise- Lager House- midnight-They are the only band playing that night and the cover will be cheap.Go see what everyone else is talking about.

Sunday
The Muggs-5pm-Pure Detroit Stage-mmmmm The Muggs. Hooray for Rock and roll.
Kelly Caldwell-7pm-Metro Times Stage
Loretta Lucas and the Larkspurs-8-Metro Times Stage- I hope she plays that song about roller skates.
Holy Fire-9pm-Metro Times Stage- Ryan told me if I don’t list them “I’ll have hell to pay”.

Monday
Shoot off fireworks- dusk-everywhere- fireworks are rad, but they can be dangerous.
In Lieu Of-4-Metro Times Stage- I hear they have a cute bass player.
Thunderbirds Are Now-7-Metro Times Stage-Some people love these guys some hate, I think the two sides should square off suring the show.
Amp Fiddler-6:30-Pure Detroit Stage
