Summer in the City

If you've been reading MCR for a while, you probably know that Cityfest is always one of our favorite events of the year. I mean how can anyone go wrong with tons of good food and a lineup of great bands? But who are we kidding, the best thing about Cityfest are Deep Fried Mars Bars. It's become a Cityfest tradition to have 1 (actually more like 2 or 3) of the most amazing food in existence, wash that down with some beers and then probably have some scorching hot fish & chips as well. The amount of money the MCR crew usually spends at Union Jack's during the week probably pays their workers salaries for the weekend. Anyways.......

This is the 20th year of Cityfest and this whole time the festival has been a fundraiser, who knew? Money raised from food & drink sales help to pay the bands, but profits also go to the New Center Council, which uses the money to do things such as keep the New Center area clean & safe, put on holiday light displays, and keep up the landscaping. As a plus, some of the profits go towards summer youth programs at area schools.

Once again, the music lineup is really solid this year. I thought about doing a preview of all the bands, but once you're down there it's pretty easy to check out most of the music, so just hear as much as you can. However, if are unfamiliar with the music on the schedule, here are my top 8 (for 2008) bands to see (ordered by day).

De La Soul - Wednesday 8:30- Motor City Casino Stage-I know 2 songs by them and they are both good. So they rest of the songs are probably good, right?

The Hentchmen - Wednesday- 9pm- Last year huge wind gusts kept knocking over Mike's cymbals, but the band kept jamming like nothing happened. Mother Nature can't stop The Hentchmen.

The Silent Years- Wednesday- 9:30pm - Pure Detroit Stage-Dreamy pop songs that are hard to resist. Every time I see this band I think I like them more.

Broken Social Scene- Friday 8:30-Motor City Casino Stage-They may show up with either 6 people or 26 people - who knows? Regardless, it will be a great show. Don't miss this set if you like music.

Millions of Brazilians- Friday 6:00-Pure Detroit Stage-RAWK! They also have the greatest band photos ever.

Grayling- Friday-7:00-Pure Detroit Stage- Straight ahead rock with a grunge feel based in solid song writing and playing.

Doop & the Inside Outlaws- Friday- Friday 9pm Park Stage- I saw these guys at the Blowout and was really impressed by their classic country/Southern rock sounds. Should be great to see them outside, on the lawn of the Park Stage.

The Four Hour Friends-Friday 8pm Park Stage- This band has a lot of people from other great bands and the transitive property of rock and roll says The Four Hour Friends are good. I tried to see them at the Blowout, but approximately 10,000 people were there and it was uncomfortable. Hopefully I will have plenty of room to enjoy them at the Park Stage.

I know this is my 9th pick, but George Clinton should also get a mention, because, well -- he's George Clinton. He came and played at my college once. I left after 4 hours; apparently, he played another hour, though. He had about 94 people in his band, with both a spaceship and a guy in a diaper. Those 3 things make an equation for awesomeness.

Head over to the Comerica Cityfest site to get all the info on hours, maps, ticket prices, music schedules, etc. See you downtown this weekend!
