THE WORD PLAY

Puddle Jumping

Life across the pond has been pretty well this year for Detroit rock ever since Kid Rock’s overplayed “All Summer Long” went #1 over there in July (What is it with mainstream radio and its ability to totally suck the life out of a song?)

It looks like Iggy Pop took a little spill off the stage at the Park Festival in London yesterday, and no he was not stage diving. That’s what you get for being a hyper crazy 61-year-old rock star.

Also, The Raconteurs played Reading Festival on Saturday. It sounds like NME really liked seeing Jack White play the festival for a fourth time in a decade.

However, everything is not so rosy for the HiFi Handgrenades. It looks like they had to cut their recent European tour short. I guess my only question for Speck and company would be, isn’t the exposure to a larger audience worth going in the hole for? In all honesty, I don’t think the euro vs. dollar exchange rate is really in your favor at the moment. Send a complaint to the White House curiosity of the HiFi Handgrenades.

As someone who's been a casual acquaintance of Speck since about 1995 or so, I understand the way he and the band feel. If every band in the world planned ahead for every possible disaster that could occur, then no one would ever tour. They had a good set of gigs lined up overseas, and the shows with Alkaline Trio would've been great because that band always draws a solid crowd no matter where they play. No one could have possibly predicted that Jerry Finn would pass away precisely in time to wipe some of those shows out.
