So this past weekend was the inaugural, rock out with your cock out bender known as Fucking Awesome Fest. I for one had a “fucking awesome” time and I’m pretty sure you did too since there wasn’t a person in attendance that wasn’t either drinking, dancing or mingling without a smile on their face. Hats off to the Majestic Theater’s talent buyer Anthony Morrow for putting on a great music festival. Here are some of the things I learned or observed during the course of the event:
- The Alley Deck in the summer is now officially the best place to see live music in Detroit. If you missed the BBQ day shows on Saturday go ahead and kick yourself, the live tunes sounded great and the summer air was intoxicating.
- SikSik Nation; who sounded great during Saturday’s BBQ, will have a new album out in October and possibly a name change.
- Millions of Brazilians; who also played on Saturday, need to have a redundant band of clones ready to go at all times in case singer Nicky Cicchetti decides to once again mosh and destroy the band’s gear.
- OFFICE live with two drummers is a must see.
- Sunday’s performances by Lee Marvin Computer Arm and Mazinga were well worth the price of admission.
- Wolfbait’s drummer Pit Viper was the clear MVP of Fucking Awesome Fest.
- Marco Polio and the New Vaccines can fill in a double set and still make you beg for more glitter. Bonus points for both hand painting and then selling tee-shirts at the event.
- Milwaukee’s Juiceboxxx needs a cheeseburger.
- From what I heard and saw overall attendance was great. Look for some tweaks next year to the stage layouts and the possibility of moving the event to the early summer.
- This event seemed to attract a younger going crowd, which means the future of Detroit rock in this city is looking bright.
