Concert Review: Heavy Trash @ Pike Room

Heavy Trash took the stage, starting their show with lethal intent, a spray of fire igniting the crowd’s massive punk-rockabilly wet dream. This was just the climax of the show that was as eclectic as it was intense.

First to go on was Satori Circus, a one man sideshow performance of numerous costume changes, specifically themed abstruse synthetic rock songs, and an entertaining strip tease–tassels finale.

DUENDE! took the stage next and held it hostage. The music began deceptively soft like a desert wind that has traveled unhindered for miles and will travel onward for many more miles, sweeping the audience within it’s vast psychedelic waves. From the lull screamed the dissonance: a whirling theramin as the tempo picked up for the rest of the set, unanticipated drumming carried us along with booming bass vibrations, energetic distorted rhythms racing along the neck of the guitar, then layered with a powerful, unique lead that must be the sound a star makes when it explodes.

Chantal Dixon enchanted when she swayed like the Sultan’s prized dancer, with a sword in hand and a serpent slithering around her petite, sensual body.

Heavy Trash took the stage, playing the show with lethal intent: a blitzkrieg of punk, a cooking swing of rockabilly, a blur of indefatiguable fingers, the swagger of craftsmen playing music that commanded that feet stomp, that hips thrust, and that voices scream in appreciation whether in the three seconds between songs or just for the hell of it. Heavy Trash delivered an edifying performance that subverted and converted just as it provided the way to go out of your mind trying to stomp that bug.
