Sporting a more meat-and-potatoes roots-rock sound than contemporaries Blanche (with both bands sharing Dave Feeny on pedal steel and backing vocals and production duties), American Mars have been playing together for over a decade. The band’s sound has been described by critics as in the vein of Ryan Adams and Tom Petty. They began recording their third album, Western Sides, in 2004, but had to postpone when their bass player was diagnosed with cancer. When he returned to health, the band finished and released Western Sides
in 2008, and returned to playing more shows around town.
