The Avatars breathe fresh life into Detroit’s bluesy, garage rock scene. Though with their pop harmonies and extremely infectious melodies, it is not entirely accurate to lump them into the garage rock genre. The band is fronted by Mariah Cherem, who’s bluesy vocals are supported by a solid, guitar-driven sound behind her. With a sound that is tighter and more balanced than most garage bands, the Avatars build on Detroit blues-rock.
Hailing from Ann Arbor, the band was formed in the spring of 2003. Singer Mariah Cherem had previously been playing with the Done Wrongs along with Don Blum and Jason Stollsteimer of the Von Bondies. Bassist Chris Box Taylor also plays with Scott Morgan’s Powertrane and guitarist Charlie Lorenzi comes all the way from Argentina where he played with The Coronados. Charlie and drummer Claudia Leo, run the hip Ann Arbor label No Fun Records.
