In Detroit, it is tough to find respect as a pop-rock singer/songwriter. In fact, you have to be darn good to pull it off. In the early 2000’s; crashing Detroit’s gritty garage rock scene with catchy and upbeat pop tunes, Brendan Benson won the Motor City’s heart over and the world alike. Critics and fans since have praised Benson and even made such lofty comparisons as David Bowie and Elliot Smith.
Brendan Benson’s underground notoriety was given a huge boost in mid 2002 after being championed by fellow Detroiter Jack White. White told LA Weekly “[Brendan]’s an extremely talented songwriter… I envy his melodies.” Benson also gained a following touring with such acts as the Flaming Lips, Beth Orton, Ben Kweller as well as the White Stripes. Later on in the summer of 2005, Benson’s career would soon reach new heights as he recorded the first Raconteurs album Broken Boy Soldiers at his former studio/home in Detroit with White. The rest is Rock N Roll history.
