mcr profile
"Nestled among the garage rock nooks and country crannies," Blanche has
a sound unlike any country band, unlike any rock band, unlike
anyone. Dan Miller formed the band around 2000 after his two
previous groups Goober & The Peas
and Two Star Tabernacle (Jack White was a part of both).
With a banjo, auto harp, pedal steel guitar and Miller's old tyme
crooning, Blanche paints a
soundscape unlike any other in Detroit - in fact, it is unlike anything
heard in the past forty years. Miller's ironic, lyrical cynicism
("Don't you know it's bad luck to be superstitious") is supported by
his wife's dreamy, airy vocals. The texture is enhanced by Patch Boyle
switching off on auto harp and banjo, Feeny on pedal steel guitar and
Lisa Jannon using light brushes and maracas to create a steady, minimal
pulse.
In 2003, Blanche gained some
exposure when their friends the White Stripes
covered their tune "Who's to Say" as the B-side of "I'm Finding It
Harder To Be A Gentleman", a single released in the U.K. Cass
Records released Blanche's first 45 in
2003. The single features guitar solos by Jack
White and vocals from Brendan Benson. The full-length, coming in
January of 2004, will be produced by Warn Defever, David Feeny and
Brendan Benson.
