Eastern Market

Eastern Market Detroit Located in the Near East Side of Detroit, Eastern Market was founded in 1841 and was built on the site of an early wood and hay market. In the 1850’s, there were three different market places in the area, the current Eastern Market location being one of them.

The first sale shed was built in 1891 along the Vernor, Russell and Gratiot area. As the market flourished, many other sheds started being built among several other eating establishments in the vicinity. During the post-depression era, the market took in record truckloads of produce, beverages and specialty items.

Eastern Market DetroitAfter World War II, the eating habits of Americans changed. Gone were the days of eastern market fresh produce replacing a well balanced meal were pre-packaged foods. The modern supermarket began to take hold, and the shopping habits of Detroiter’s were changing. Still, Eastern market retained its old style appeal, and it became an important hub for food distribution to southeastern Michigan. In 1977, the market was declared a historic site by the State of Michigan Historical Commission. In fact, many of the original structures are still in operation today.

In addition to its rich past, the Eastern Market was also a place where Generals Ulysses S. Grant, George Custer and John J. Pershing marched troops (their camps were set up nearby). Also, part of the Underground Railroad was located under Eastern Market. Many slaves went through Eastern Market, to the Detroit River and on to Canada.

Today, the market is spread over a 43-acre area and sells everything from farm fresh fruits, vegetable, meat products (fresh beef, poultry, rabbits, pork, lamb, etc.), candies, herbs and spices, as well as other specialty items. It is estimated that on any particular Saturday, approximately 45,000 people turn out to shop at the open air market.
