The Fondas are soul
revival by
way of lighthearted pop and a tinge of messier garage. The
dynamic and foxy frontwoman Julie Benjamin carries the momentum of the
band with her forceful vocals and eye-catching presence on the
stage. Also the drummer for the band Slumber
Party, Benjamin is supported by a more than capable crew of Detroit
rockers. Chip Sercombe was formerly in the Hysteric Narcotics and the Sillies, Mark Niemenski was also in
the Hysteric Narcotics and
Joe Burdick rocked with the Buzzards
and the Dirtys.
Steve Shaw is an ex-guitarist of the Detroit
Cobras. In fact, the Fondas
sound has a some similarity to that of the Cobras – playing soul and Motown covers, the
bands draw from a similar pool of repertoire. The Cobras, however, have a stronger soul influence
while the Fondas have more
of a pop flavor.
The Fondas released their first
full-length album in 2003 on the Sympathy
for the Record Industry label. On the album, they revitalize
tunes by Hank Ballard, Mose Allison and Nolan Strong. The
Fondas display their own songwriting talent with Mark
Niemenski’s “Wanna Be”. --Ryan Sult
