August 18, 2001 was a sad day in the Detroit music scene... the Gold Dollar closed its doors. This joint will live on long after its shuttering however, both in Detroit music and in rock & roll. In its short lifetime, 1996-2001, the Gold Dollar became Detroit's legendary musical home. Filling a void that had been vacant since the closing of Bookies' Club 870, the Dollar provided a space for Detroit music scensters to meet, rock and have a rollicking good time. Virtually all of Detroit's best graced the Gold Dollar stage including the Detroit Cobras, The Wildbunch (now Electric Six), The Witches, Rocket 455, Arab on Radar, The Hentchmen, Bantam Rooster, The Soledad Brothers, Godzuki, His Name Is Alive, The Sillies, The Dirtys, Outrageous Cherry, They Come In Threes, The Go, The Volebeats, The Come Ons, Gore Gore Girls, Broadzilla, Slumber Party, Blanche, The Clone Defects, Whirlwind Heat... and on and on. The Gold Dollar's most famous claim to fame however, is a duo from southwest Detroit called the White Stripes. Jack and Meg made their debut here opening for The Hentchmen on August 15, 1997. Gold Dollar regulars recall that the Stripes got a lukewarm reception at first, but by February, 1999, the Gold Dollar billing read "Southwest Detroit's finest 2 piece? Stripped down to voice, guitar and drums, the White Stripes basic and minimalist approach has made them a unique favorite." Check out the Gold Dollar website, still online, for the complete list of shows as they originally appeared. Apparently it's true that all good things must come to an end. After five years of running the Gold Dollar, owner Neil Yee decided give the venture up. Though Neil searched for a buyer to continue the Gold Dollar's legacy, the venue currently sits vacant. Never fear however, venues such as the Lager House, Alvin's and Small's have kept the Detroit scene alive and well. --Ryan Sult visit the official gold dollar website |
