The boundries of Livonia Township were set during an act of territorial legislature in 1835, and the area became home to dairy farms and fruit orchards. The original inhabitants of Livonia were the Potowatami Indians. In later years, the rich soil attracted pioneers from the eastern states. In fact, "Livonia" is the name of a town in New York and a former Russian province as well.
For the first 100 years of Livonia"s history, it was primarily known as a farming community. However, in the 1940's, the area started taking its first "industrial steps". The GM Corporation built plants in the area and Ford soon followed.
In 1950 residents of Livonia Township voted to become the City of Livonia. The city now boasts a population over 100,000 people. --Jacquie Trost
