New Grenada was started in early 2000 by John Nelson and since then has been heralded as one of the first and truly original “indy rock” bands to ever come out of the metro Detroit music scene.  Though the band has had several lineup changes through the years (including Shawn Knight of Child Bite and Nick Pallos of Cloud Car,) John Nelson masterful singing and songwriting ability has always been at the heart of the bands unique approach to modern punk rock.

After touring the country throughout  2006 and 2007 in support of their highly acclaimed Modern Problems album; in late December of 2008, John Nelson reformed New Grenada to release their fourth full length LP Energy Shortage.
