mcr profile
Powertrane comes
straight out of a long tradition of edgy, Detroit rock n’ roll. Madeup
of Detroit rock legends along side driving, young talent, Powertrane embodies the best of
the gritty Motor City sound.
The legendary rocker Scott Morgan formed the band in 2001. Morgan’s
original claim to fame was the 60’s band The Rationals. In the next decade,
he went on to rock with Fred “Sonic” Smith (MC5) in the Sonic’s Rendezvous Band. The 80’s
found Morgan as a bandmate of Scott Asheton (the Stooges) in Scots Pirates and finally, he
joined The Hydromatics.
Guitarist Robert Gillespie is another veteran of the Detroit rock
scene. He was a part of the Rob
Tyner Band and formed The
Torpedos with Johnny Angelos. In the 80’s, he joined up with Mitch Ryder’s Detroit Wheels and
has continued to work with Ryder up to the present. He also formed the Motor City Rockers - which included
Jimmy Marinos of the Romantics.
In Powertrane, Morgan and
Gillespie are joined by bassist Chris Taylor (The Avatars, Mazinga) and drummer
Andy Frost (Hydromatics, High Rollers).
Powertrane recorded
their first album, Ann Arbor Revival
Meeting, in 2003 for the Philadelphia-based Real O Minds
Records. The album, recorded live at Ann Arbor’s Blind Pig, features guest performances by Ron
Asheton (the Stooges), Hiawatha Bailey (Cult
Heroes) and Deniz Tek (Radio
Birdman). --Ryan Sult
