Ten Words for Snow
Hairshirt
Sybris
Double Split 7-Inch
Boy Arm Records
By Gary Blackwell

This double-vinyl set supplies a solid lot of summer listening within 17 minutes of material.  Ten Words for Snow scales back its obtrusive progressive pop nature a bit; in turn, the band offers its best two recorded
tracks to date.  "Shake You Off" is a sweet, cascading pop number that melds XTC with Ric Ocasek, while the synth-laced, surprisingly danceable "Garbage Truck" reaches its peaks with dissonant rhythm structures and vocal parts that soar unexpectedly.  Hairshirt's "Party Sisters" is a jagged piece of minimal art-pop that carries serious 'spontaneous dance party' inducing potential (think Gang of Four, Peter Murphy, The Cure and early Pere Ubu all slopped up in a musical smoothie).  Sybris is the odd band out of the dance-rock party with "The Clowns Were Hilarious," a delicate, haunting song that ebbs and flows like a lovesick ghost floating through a lonely haunted house.  All of the above makes for an infectious vinyl set, indeed.
