mcr profile
Friends since the fourth grade, Whirlwind Heat first started
playing gigs in the Grand Rapids area in 1996. Lead vocalist
David Swanson recalls the trio's first big gig opening for Arab On
Radi the very day he obtained his Moog synthesizer (old school
synth
built by innovator Robert Moog). As a result, Swanson recalls the
show was mostly just "me making a bunch of noises." The trio got
a
lucky break after playing Detroit's Gold Dollar
in 1999 - Italy Records founder Dave Buick
heard them and decided to give them a shot. The single, Glaxefusion
was released in 2000. A second break came when
the band
played a gig at the Magic Stick where
they caught the attention of a man by the name of Jack White. White invited the trio to
lay down a few tracks at his attic studio. The boys of Whirlwind
Heat had never even heard of the White
Stripes at this point - in fact, most of us hadn't yet, as this was
just before the
release of De Stijl. For Whirlwind Heat's
full length
debut, White signed them to his Third
Man imprint (under the V2 umbrella). Unleashing their bass-driven, screeching synth-ridden
sound to the world, Do Rabbits
Wonder? was released on April 15, 2003. --Ryan
